Problems with the Central Business District

An issue in the world’s most CBDs is that the volume of traffic caused air contamination and was a risk to wellbeing and security of customers and different people on foot. Luckily this issue doesn't make a difference to Vienna any longer. In the past it used to be an issue in Vienna as well however the legislature acted quick and utilized certain insurances to end this issue. What they did was that they set various sorts of open vehicle like transports, cable cars and trains. These urged individuals to not bring their vehicles out to the principal locale thus contamination was reduced. The government additionally thought of another arrangement and that was to expand the costs of leaving in the primary region. This disheartened individuals to utilize their vehicles in the CBD on the grounds that they would need to pay a great deal of cash for leaving. Every one of these thoughts aided and now there is basically no contamination in the CBD of Vienna. In many CBDs progressively t aller structures were worked to attempt to balance the high rates and leases that came about because of the high land esteems. This is a major issue in a city like Chicago or New York, where all the structures are high and have numerous little apartments. This is certainly not a major issue in Vienna however on the grounds that the administration doesn't permit individuals to manufacture houses which are taller than the top of stephansdom, thus there are no tall structures in Vienna’s CBD. In spite of the fact that there aren’t numerous tall structures, the land costs are extremely high and that outcomes in relatively few individuals living in the primary region. A significant issue in many CBDs is that bigger shops moved out and re-situated on less clogged destinations in either old downtown zone or on the rustic urban fringe. This issue prompts not having numerous huge shops in the city and furthermore numerous shops will be compelled to move. This is additionally an i ssue in Vienna’s CBD since numerous huge shops and retail establishments like furnishings and floor covering shops had to move out of the CBD and go to different areas outside the city to the old downtown part and numerous shops like electrical shops had to move to country urban periphery parts of the city. Another difficult which is comparative is that littler shops like butchers and staple goods were likewise compelled to shut down in view of the city turning out to be progressively expensive. This made numerous individuals change employments or fail. This is as yet an issue in the primary area of Vienna as an ever increasing number of little shops close down and enormous shops move out and the legislature can’t successfully stop this. Another serious issue in some CBDs is that the downtown areas were not arranged currently and cautiously thus they don't consider people groups prudent, social and ecological needs. This isn't at all an issue in the CBD of Vienna since there are numerous parks, shops, workplaces and other diversion offices like cafés, bars, films and clubs. This could be a major issue in the CBD of LEDCs since the urban communities were not all that painstakingly arranged like the CBD of Tehran which has this serious issue. In Vienna the CBD has numerous parks like the burggarten and other little stops to help the people’s ecological requirements. There are additionally a wide range of shops and workplaces in the principal region which are the financial pieces of the CBD and of centers there are numerous social offices like films, bars and clubs where individuals can meet. The CBD of Vienna can satisfy all affordable, social and halfway natural needs of any citizen. In numerous downtown areas, there is a huge requirement for change. There ought to be regular changes happening like lessening traffic blockage and contamination. This should be possible in different manners. One is to improve open vehicle like transports and pre pares to the CBD and another approach to do it is to put person on foot zones in the CBD in the most jam-packed piece of the city. This will make the guest a much wonderful condition and will urge more individuals to go to the CBD. Person on foot zones are additionally an answer for isolating customers and traffic. Passerby zones take care of two issues by simply doing making one change. It’s like the familiar axiom â€Å"hitting two winged animals with one stone†. On the off chance that these passerby zones are set well and have some decent enrichments to it, at that point it makes the CBD a progressively lovely and more secure spot as well, however putting a couple police headquarters around would likewise progress admirably. These will all pull in more individuals and the economy will have a decent lift. Improved innovation has empowered home shopping and diminished the requirement for workplaces to be halfway found. This would diminish traffic a great deal and would acquire the costs the CBDs down since there will be more structures for homes. It would likewise make significantly simpler for certain individuals like elderly individuals who don't have the ability to come out and do their shopping. It would likewise cut the shop costs down on the grounds that the interest of shops will diminish. This change is useful for individuals however not all that great for retailers and land designers. Doing so will likewise open up a great deal of territories in which recreation enhancements. These recreation conveniences could be restrictions arcade focuses and for night enhancements, they could become bars, clubs and films. This will make the CBD additionally intriguing and will make it occupied during that time just as through the day. These changes will make the city increasingly fun and entertaining for the more youthful age and would make life simpler for the more seasoned. In numerous nations, the downtown areas have needed to experience a few chang es trying to decrease the loss of shops, inns, and workplaces to away areas. The first and most significant change which happened was the formation of passerby zones. Walker zones are for the most part either traffic free or they permit constrained access to conveyance vehicles and open vehicle. An instance of these person on foot zones in Vienna is the Karntner Stra?e and the Graben. Both of these spots are walker zones yet in Karntner Stra?e just conveyance trucks are permitted and that’s just toward the beginning of the prior day 10oclock yet in graben some open vehicle transports are permitted to trespass. In the past vehicles have been permitted to experience both these spots however now to lessen traffic contamination and mishaps and to expand security , the legislature has changed these lanes to person on foot zones. Another advancement in universes most CBDs which was another development, was the creation of shopping centers. Presently in many CBDs there are many shopp ing centers however in Vienna’s CBD there are relatively few shopping malls. In Vienna most shops are by the boulevards and are not in one structure, despite the fact that there are a couple of special cases where more than one shop is in one structure like the steffel building which has a wide range of brands at a bargain. Vienna’s CBD is not normal for most CBD and has little shops instead of enormous shopping centers. This style of shops is the thing that makes the CBD of Vienna extremely one of a kind and dissimilar to some other city. In the previous years the interest for a loosening up air in the CBDs has expanded and governments have attempted to give sitting territories, planting flowerbeds and bushes and including little zones of grass.Other techniques are furnishing bistros with outside tables and utilizing more staff to ensure the spot is perfect and unharmed. The city of Vienna has nearly done these things. They have unquestionably given numerous bistros, b ars and limitations with outside tables like in the Karntner Stra?e and they have planted numerous trees and blossoms in the lanes like around the Ring strasse. They have additionally attempted to make a few zones of green and blossoms. The CBD of Vienna has experienced numerous adjustments before is still changing. There have been numerous acceptable changes and a couple of awful changes. The creation of a long passerby zone where most the CBDs well known shops are, was an excellent change and diminished a ton of traffic and contamination and made the CBD wonderful and unwinding. Causing a decent open vehicle to experience the city additionally diminished a great deal of traffic and made it simpler for individuals to circumvent the CBD and carry out their responsibility. There are as yet numerous issues too in the CBD advertisement those should change soon, similar to the modernization of the structures in the primary region and the augmenting of some fundamental streets. The CBD of Vienna is fascinating and has numerous enhancements like bistros and parks for during the day and films, restrictions, bars and clubs for the evenings. The CBD of Vienna has gotten exceptionally special and is useful for each age. It incorporates numerous huge walkways and numerous person on foot zones. The legislature of Vienna has made the CBD of Vienna exceptionally simple to get around and has additionally made it extremely unwinding and that’s why as I would see it has gotten one of the world’s best Central Business Districts.

It is an intense issue when somebody's body shape is dictated by hereditary demeanor but they attempt to change it to fit a nonexistent perfect of how an individual should look.      Thus, one of the most significant issues is that female nature isn't what society says it ought to be. A few analysts guess that anorexia is a youthful lady's method of dropping adolescence. Since they need muscle versus fat, anorexics don't get their periods and frequently lose their sexual qualities, for example, open hair. They stay, at the end of the day, young ladies. There is additionally the unpredictable issue of ladies feeling that by having a dietary problem they are at long last in charge of something in their life. (Attie and Brooks-Gun, pp.70-71).      Studies propose that dietary issues regularly start in ahead of schedule to mid-immaturity. They are legitimately associated with pubertal development and the increments in muscle to fat ratio that... ...hing else, we have to discover sympathy and comprehension for the survivors of dietary issues. While we deal with helping these people, we should likewise battle the social powers that generalize and misuse female self-perception to the disservice of ladies, however of all mankind. Nobody benefits in the event that one half of humankind is being held enduring an onslaught by socially developed body pictures that are established in dismal purpose and juvenile dream. Juvenile Court Essays

Adolescent Court Essays Adolescent Court Essay Adolescent Court Essay Adolescent documents are classified in light of the fact that there are state laws in each express that orders that adolescent records are secret. Forâ a adolescent to have there fileâ sealed they need to demand it from the court. Most get probation with conditions like network administration, guiding or sedate treatment. We need to take a gander at adolescents uniquely in contrast to we do grown-ups in light of their formative advancement. Each adolescent official who experiences preparing gets educated about the juvenileâ developmental process.Research of court methodology in the province of Nevada for adolescents guilty parties who have not yet arrived at 18 years old ordinarily enter the adolescent equity framework as opposed to the grown-up criminal equity framework. While a considerable lot of the wrongdoings carried out might be the equivalent, adolescent guilty parties are dependent upon various laws and strategies than grown-ups who have been accused of violations. The ad olescent is captured by police and booked simply like grown-ups would be, with the distinction that then the youngster is given to the guardians following a court proceeding.A number of exercises are viewed as offenses when submitted by adolescents, in light of the their age at the hour of the movement. These are called status offenses. Instances of status offenses include: 1. Truancy 2. Ownership and utilization of liquor 3. Check in time infringement, and 4. Acquisition of cigarettes. Nevada carefully authorizes minor under lock and key (MIP) laws and indict minors to the furthest reaches of the law. In Nevada liquor, medications, and tobacco are truly open to minors because of the introduction to the nightlife. In different states, in any case, a minor in a MIP case might have the option to get probation by entering an official courtrooms infringement incorporate taking cash or a vehicle, or hitting or undermining somebody. Pay heed that Family Court plays an immense difficulty in the process which I do believe is perfect, because of the reality the kid is under 18.Although I do accept on the off chance that an adolescent keeps re-culpable, at that point there should be some plan of action of results, at that point a straightforward slap on the hand no longer reach out to them. Now and again it is that strong but fair affection that will wake a youthful adolescent out of their culpable trance like state. All t hings considered I widen my exploration and happened upon some progressively clever data as indicated by Think Before You Plead:Juvenile Collateral Consequences in the State of HawaiiIn the province of Hawaii, the insurance outcomes of an adolescent record are restricted by Hawaii’s Revised Statutes, which precludes free of adolescent records, and restrains the dissemination of such data.Despite this constraint, there are exemptions to the general standard that regularly impacts a juvenile’s future. Guarantee outcomes as often as possible originate from access to adolescent records, and can impact instruction, professions, and open help. ;gt;Currently, there is no database or legal assortment that advises adolescents regarding the security results that may come from an adolescent mediation. Also, in the territory of Hawaii, numerous arrangements with respect to the Juvenile Aid Section of the police division and adolescent captures are not determined in the resolution. gt;Because adolescent records are viewed as private in Hawaii, there is no legal commitment or even arrangement to advise youth of any chance to cancel records. Lawyers may document a movement for expungement, but such movement is uncommon on the grounds that adolescent records are not open to the open missing a court request. A lawyer can make a movement to have the record canceled when an adolescent isn't officially charged or settled, however and, after its all said and done, the lawyer isn't required to do so.Although an adolescent may profit by having a record erased, not in any case the family court judge has a commitment to illuminate an adolescent regarding these rights. ;gt;Despite records being secret, numerous organizations have legal power to get to the Juvenile Justice Information System (JJIS), which stores all adolescent capture and court information. The resolution allowing access incorporates, yet isn't restricted to, area police divisions, province investigators, fa mily courts, youth remedial offices, social assistance offices, just as offices leading examination. ttp://www. beforeyouplea. com/hello there As far as my musings on the viability of this sort of framework I am totally supportive of it with respect to guarantee the adolescent rights are ensured and not disregarded, and yet they are considered responsible to their activities. I figures I might want to see increasingly proactive plan of action in the network and condition with youthful guilty parties than the run of the mill classes or certain restricted long stretches of network administration. All around expressed post Frank! Intriguing data about Californias adolescent equity frameworks procedures.I was keen on the kinds of hearing that you have in California. I have never known about a wellness hearing and a character hearing. Here in Missouri we have about indistinguishable strategies from California other than those meeting that you referenced. We have an arbitration and manner hearing when an adolescent request or movement has been recorded. The adolescent official goes about as the investigator in a large number of the territories in Missouri. I decide if to document on an adolescent or handle the case informally.I do the entirety of the recording and court work. Once in court I make proposals to the Judge on the demeanor of the case. | It depends on the offense that the adolescent submitted on deciding if the person is kept. The developing significance in adolescent courts is responsibility. Adolescent responsibility necessitates that the adolescent court framework react to illicit conduct so that the guilty party is made mindful of and answerable for the harm executed upon the person in question. |

Anosognosia Condition and Anorexia

Anosognosia Condition and Anorexia October 18, 2019 PM Images, Stone, Getty Images More in Eating Disorders Symptoms Treatment Diagnosis Awareness and Prevention Perhaps one of the most troublesome symptoms of  anorexia nervosa  and other restrictive eating disordersâ€"especially for family members and treatment professionalsâ€"is the patient’s belief that he or she is not ill. The common consequence of not believing one is ill is that he or she does not want to get well.  Indeed, a patient’s lack of concern for the problem has long been a defining feature of anorexia nervosa. As far back as 1873, Ernest-Charles  Lasègue, a French doctor who was one of the first to describe anorexia nervosa, wrote: “I do not suffer and must then be well, is the monotonous formula.” Clinical studies, as reported by Dr. Vandereycken, have reported “denial of illness” to be present in as many as 80% of the anorexia nervosa patients surveyed. In some populations of anorexia nervosa patients, this percentage may be lower. Denial of illness is common in people with eating disorders. In fact, lack of insight into the severity of illness is a defining feature of anorexia nervosa. In a study by Konstantakopoulos and colleagues,  a subgroup of anorexia nervosa patients (24%) had severe impairment of insight.  They also found that patients with restrictive anorexia nervosa had poorer overall insight than patients with anorexia nervosa, binge-purge subtype. The diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa include a “disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced.” Patients may be extremely emaciated, yet believe they are overweight. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), states: “individuals with anorexia nervosa frequently either lack insight into or deny the problem.” How Eating Disorders Are Diagnosed In earlier writings about anorexia nervosa, this lack of awareness of the problem was often called denial, having been first described when psychodynamic theories predominated. However, the condition has more recently been renamed  anosognosia. This term was originally used by neurologists to describe a neurological syndrome in which people with brain damage have a profound lack of awareness of a particular deficit. Anosognosia, or lack of awareness, has an anatomical basis and is caused by damage to the brain. More recently the term began to also be applied to psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Brain imaging studies seem to indicate a brain connection between anosognosia and these conditions.   The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that anosognosia affects 50% of people with schizophrenia and 40% of people with bipolar disorder, and is believed to be the primary reason that patients with these disorders often do not take their medication. Applying the term anosognosia to anorexia nervosa makes sense because we know that the  brain is affected by malnutrition. In a paper in 2006, Dr. Vanderycken wrote, “In many cases of anorexia nervosa, the striking indifference in the face of emaciation looks akin to the anosognosia described in neurological disorders.” In 1997, Dr. Casper wrote, “The lack of concern to the potentially dangerous consequences of undernutrition indeed suggests that alarming information might not be processed or might not reach awareness.” Someone with a malnourished or damaged brain may not be thinking clearly enough to use denial as an emotional defense mechanism. Compensatory Behaviors in Eating Disorders Implications Viewing anorexia nervosa through the lens of anosognosia has significant ramifications.  If an individual suffering a severe mental illness with  life-threatening complications does not believe he or she is ill, he or she is unlikely to be receptive to treatment. This increases the potential risks for medical problems as well as a long course of illness. These individuals may be incapable of insight-oriented treatment, which was, until recently, a common treatment for anorexia nervosa. This is one reason there is often a need for  more intensive treatment  such as residential care. It is also why  family-based treatment  (FBT) may be more successful: in FBT, parents do the behavioral heavy lifting of restoring a patient’s nutritional health. When someone with an eating disorder refuses to believe they are ill or seems disinterested in recovery, they arent necessarily being defiant or resistant. Its more likely that they are incapable of insight. Fortunately, motivation is not required for recovery if your loved one is a minor or is a young adult who is financially dependent. You can be firm and insist on treatment for them. Dr. Vandereycken writes that “communicating with someone who has an eating disorder but denies it is not easy.” He suggests three strategies for loved ones: Show support and concern (otherwise you will seem uncaring);Express empathy and understanding; andTell the truth. In summary, anosognosia is a brain condition; it is not the same as denial. Fortunately, the brain recovers with renourishment and a return to a healthy weight. Motivation and insight usually return in time for the individual to tackle the remainder of their own recovery. How Anorexia Affects the Brain Further Reading A review of research studies on anosognosia in mental Illness is available through the Treatment Advocacy Center.  Laura Collins has written about anosognosia in anorexia nervosa.

Importance of Drones in Controlling Ocean Pollution - 550 Words

Importance of Drones in Controlling Ocean Pollution (Essay Sample) Content: Importance of Drones in Controlling Ocean PollutionName:Sample submitted to Writerscash.com13th November 2014Importance of Drones in Controlling Ocean PollutionDrones, through their sophisticated technology, help in controlling ocean pollution. Human activity has been the main cause of this type of pollution that has far-reaching effects to both flora and fauna. Harmful effects of pollutants deposited in the oceans affect both the aquatic life and also human beings who depend on the water for earning a living. Many nations have started implementing drones in their systems. The latter are corrective mechanisms to the problem (Haveman, 2011). Drones protect tourism industries that are largely affected by water pollution. This paper will address the causes, effects and possible drone interventions that can be applied to end the problem of oceans pollution.Drones work towards controlling oil pollution. The latter is mostly caused by the large water vessels such as ships a nd ferries while transporting people and cargo across the large water masses. Mechanical problems of such vessels lead to leakages of either the fuel consumed in powering their engines or the cargo being transported by tankers. Many nations get engaged in importation of oil from source countries (Hoskisson, 2010). If drones are not used during transportation, oil ends up spilling in the water through exhaust fumes or leakages hence causing the aquatic creatures to die. Drones, therefore, have sophisticated software that can demarcate the regions that are prone to oil pollutionDrones are effective in management of industrial waste. This waste poses adverse effects on the oceans. Drones help in the monitoring of disposable wastes from industries. Many industries release their waste direct to oceans such as hot and dirty water. The waste is ejected after cooling machines, and also untreated waste products that are released after being processed. They trigger harmful effects on the aqua tic creatures, hence leading to their death. They also release harmful untreated fumes comprising of Carbon (IV) Oxide and Sulphur which react with rain water to form acidic substance (Hoskisson, 2010). Drones control acidic rain, which after mixing with the ocean water changes its pH level, makes it hard for the aquatic life to survive.Drones can ascertain the location of major nonpoint sources of ocean pollution such as runoff water that drains pollutants from the land to the ocean. It occurs when harmful materials are deposited in the water such as oil from ships, dumping of plastic materials, or directing industrial waste to the oceans. Soil is also directed to the ocean when it rains, hence making the aquatic environment unfavorable for the supporting life of its inhabitants (Haveman, 2011). Drones help governments allocate the necessary resources to such sectors and affected regions.Drones have surveillance cameras that can alert the concerned parties about any death of aquati c animals. When most of the aquatic creatures die they are taken to the sho...

The Failure of the Treaty of Versailles Essay - 1595 Words

Imagine this: a child starts a fight on the playground in elementary school. After a nasty scuffle he is caught and brought into the principal’s office for punishment. Present in the office is the mother of a child whose arm was broken in the fight. She wants the child punished severely as restitution for hurting her son. Next is one of the children who stepped in to defend the victim. He wants the child punished, but not as harshly as the mother. And, of course, the principal. He stepped in at the end of the fight and broke it up. His only goal at this point is to make sure another fight does not occur. He firmly believed that Germany should be crushed so it could not start another war such as the one they just ended. (Lentin 22). George of Britain, under the pressure of his voting public, supported a revenge policy towards Germany, but not one as severe as the policy France was proposing. He also had ideas of using Germany as a buffer to stop the spread of Communism in the region (â€Å"The Treaty of Versailles,† History). Wilson on the other hand had no thoughts of revenge; his goal was simply to try to reach a lasting peace. His plan for this was set out in his Fourteen Points plan to encourage an end to fighting and the spread of democracy. This plan included opening trade, slowly disarming all countries, and putting a stop to secret diplomacy. The points also included the creation of the League of Nations, a coalition that was to include the major nations of the world that would meet with the common goal of avoiding another world war (Gay and Gay). If Wilson had actively stuck to this plan, the future most likely would have been a different story. But all of these differing viewpoints made negoti ations difficult and the he settled for a compromise that may have seemed appropriate at the time but resulted in negative consequences for the world. Conflict Government and Policy Team Free Essays

Case Study3 : The Poisoned Chalice: By Matthew Mcdonald, University of New South Wales Joseph had been a team leader for two years and felt he was ready to take the next step in his public service career. He had begun his career as a graduate trainee in the Department of Agriculture after completing a double degree in commerce and environmental science. After his traineeship he was offered permanency as a policy officer, eventually rising to the post of team leader. We will write a custom essay sample on Conflict: Government and Policy Team or any similar topic only for you Order Now As a team leader Joseph felt he had gained the trust and respect of his four staff member and had learnt the basic skills of being a manager. Joseph applied for various management positions within his own department without success. Undeterred, he applied for a position in another government department responsible for environment and heritage and was successful. The role involved taking over the position of manager of a â€Å"Taskforce† that had been set up five months previously. The taskforce was made up of 10 team members responsible for developing and implementing a set of government policies and programs designed to assist primary producers to manage better the environmental threats to their land. Joseph couldn’t have been happier with his new promotion and he looked forward to applying what he had learned as a team leader to the challenges of his new post. The taskforce itself was divided into two teams. The first team- â€Å"the policy team† was responsible for developing policies in consultation with the minister’s office that would underpin the programs to be eventually rolled put all over the country. This team was made up of highly experienced member. The second team- â€Å"the implementation team† was responsible for implementing the policies developed by the policy team. The job of the implementation team was to deal with the logistic of implementing the programs and working with the numerous stakeholders involved. For Joseph, everything started put well in his new position. He gradually got to know each of the team members, who seemed skilled and competent in each of their roles. He also began to understand better the job that the taskforce was required to do. However, as the days turned into weeks some major problems in the taskforce began to appear. The first major problem was that other sections within the department were unhelpful and difficult to deal with when he made requests of them or sought to initiate collaborations. When he asked his staff why this was the case, the most common response was that the department had â€Å"had it in† for the taskforce as posing a threat to their own positions. The bad blood between the taskforce and the rest of the department made Joseph’s position vary difficult because he and his staff were heavily reliant on other areas of the department for their expertise, advice and assistance in order to manage the project successfully. The second major problem was the taskforce itself, Joseph began to realize that the two teams were highly antagonistic towards each other. This was evident in taskforce meetings, where there was an obvious hostility between them. Joseph also discovered that very little had been achieved since the taskforce was setup, and found that it was now well behind the government’s schedule. However, the full implications of Joseph’s predicament became apparent only after a revealing conversation with Alison, a junior member of the implementation team, while working back late one evening. Alison told Joseph that the previous manager of the taskforce, John, had left the position because of the problems associated with it, everything had started out well; however, then the policy team had begun to treat the implementation team as inferior because the implementation team members were younger in age, were less experienced and had made a major blunder in the first few weeks by getting a national farmers’ union offside. After this blunder the policy team had begun to refer to the implementation team as ‘the idiots’. The policy team had also taken a superior attitude towards members of other sections within the department because of their close relationship with the minister’s office. This problem came to a head after a chain of emails had been leaked to the rest of the department by a member of the implementation team, who had inadvertently received them, in the emails, members of the policy team had made disparaging remarks about people from other section with whom they had been working, this had created a furors in the department. As a result, a number of formal complaints about members of the policy team had been made. Instead of dealing with this and the other problem associated with the taskforce, the previous manager, John, had closeted himself away in his office, hoping they would go away. Realizing that events were starting to get out of control, John’s manager. Max, had stepped in to try and sort out the situation. He had done this by speaking with all of the taskforce members both individually and as a group. This had made a difference for a short time: however, the antagonism between the two teams in the taskforce had eventually returned, and it had seemed the nothing could be done to repair the damage inflicted by the leaking of the emails. It was at this point that John had resigned. Due to the taint that hung over the taskforce, no one in the department had been willing to apply for the now vacant position of taskforce manager. After speaking with Alison, Joseph realized he had been handed a â€Å"poisoned chalice† that nobody else wanted. He became very worried that the taskforce would not meet the departments’ and the government’s objectives and timelines, and the he would be blamed for its failure, adversely affecting his long-term career and future promotion prospects. Discussion Questions 1. Using the â€Å"model of conflict processes†, identify the sources of conflict between the policy team and the implementation team. 2. Were Max’s actions appropriate in this situation? If so, why? If not, what should he have done instead? 3. What actions should Joseph take to ensure that the taskforce meets the government’s objectives and timelines? How to cite Conflict: Government and Policy Team, Papers

So you go out side and to get some fresh air and what do you know there’s some more people lighting it up and smoking but they are polite enough to go outside. Doesn’t this annoy you, that you can barely go anywhere without people smoking in your presence. This leads us to the question, Should smoking in public areas be allowed? Smoking in public areas is something that could definitely be dealt without. The things I will cover with you are the effects of smoking, the effects of second hand smoke, and some policies that are against public smoking. First I’ll start with the effects of smoking. To make cigarettes, tobacco leaves are dried and shredded, and then they are rolled into tubes. The smoke from tobacco in these cigarettes contains more than 4,000 gases and chemicals many of them are poisonous. Some of theses substances include ammonia, which is used in cleaning fluids, carbon monoxide, the deadly gas in car exhaust fumes, and tar. When cigarette smoke is inhaled, these substances are injected into the body. A smoker breathes smoke directly through the mouth in the bronchial tubes, which lead to the lungs. Tiny particles stick to the walls of the tubes, causing irritation. Then the smoke passes into the lungs and it leaves behind a brown tar. This tar contains chemicals, which lead to lung cancer. Nine out of ten deaths from lung cancer are caused by smoking. The American Lung Association says cigarette smoking kills 11,000 lung cancer patients a year and 13 percent of these patients survive more than 5 years. Currently in the United States, approximately 26% of adu lts smoke cigarettes. Cigarettes don’t only cause lung cancers but can also cause other problems to the heart and blood vessels. Some other cancers associated with smoking include larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, stomach, and some other organs. Smoking also causes some serious respiratory diseases. Emphysema is a disease that robs a person of their ability to breathe. This disease is terminal and it kills you. It destroys a little bit of your lungs at a time so you don’t even realize there is problem. Patients who have emphysema can survive for many years with the help of oxygen tanks and special breathing exercises. Everyday activities, like shopping, cleaning, or exercising are some things that you can’t do in the later stages of emphysema. Elaine Landau says in her book â€Å"Cigarettes† that one cigarette lessens a smokers life by 7 minutes. Overall smoking is very dangerous a deadly it causes over 300,000 deaths a year in the United States. So if you’re ever offered one just remember how dangerous it is even if it only lessens your life by 7 minutes. However you don’t have to smoke to be harmed by cigarette. This leads us to the effects of secondhand smoke. Inhaling smoke from others is called passive smoking. There two kinds of secondhand smoke, mainstream and sidestream smoke. Sidestream makes up 80 percent of secondhand smoke and mainstream 20 percent. Sidestream is the more dangerous of the two because it has higher concentrations of poisons than mainstream smoke. This smoke is from the lit end of a cigarette that never passes through the filter. It flows into the air between the smoker’s puffs. Mainstream is the smoke exhaled by the smoker. In early 1993, the United States Environmental Protection Agency released a report that showed the respiratory health effects from breathing secondhand smoke. In that report it stated that secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in adult nonsmokers and impairs the respiratory health of children. About 3,000 American nonsmokers die each year from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoke, of these; the estimate is 800 from exposure to secondhand smoke at home and 2,200 from exposure in work or social situations. It is clear that those who work or li ve with smokers have a greater risk of lung cancer than those who are less exposed Every year, an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 children under 18 months of age get pneumonia or bronchitis from breathing secondhand tobacco smoke. 50 to 67% of children under the age of five live in homes with at least one adult smoker. Secondhand smoke is a risk factor for the development of asthma in children and worsens the condition of up to one million asthmatic children. Children exposed to secondhand smoke damage their developing tissues. Children that breathe in secondhand smoke visit the hospital for breathing problems more often than those who are not exposed. According to the National Institutes of Health, children who breathe in secondhand smoke are at risk for a number of other health concerns. They are more likely to experience middle ear problems, coughing and wheezing, and worsened asthma conditions. Overall about 53,000 people in the world die each year because of secondhand smoke. Now you might be asking yourself how you avoid secondhand smoke. Well there a couple thi ngs you can do. The first thing you can is stop smoking if you do and consult your physician if you need help. The second thing is if you have household members who smoke, help them stop. If it is not possible to stop their smoking, ask them, and visitors, to smoke outside of your home. The third thing you can do is Do not allow smoking in your car. And the final thing you can do is to make sure your school or your children’s school is smoke free. In fact many restaurants, work offices, and public areas prohibit smoking in their building areas. If only there were a law that stopped smoking all together millions of lives would be saved and you wouldn’t have to worry about secondhand smoke. This brings us to some policies that are against public smoking. Smoking in the world is being prohibited in more and more places. Many forms of transportation, such as trains, some buses, and airplanes, do not allow travelers to smoke on board. It is also banned at most job sites, public buildings, airports, and many restaurants. The movement to stop smoking is international many of similar steps have been taken in numerous countries. Laws to control or prevent cigarette sales and smoking have been passed by many states and local governments. Over 42 states and 400 cities and towns limit smoking in public places such as city hall, stores, and elevators. Eleven states require restaurants to offer separate seating for non-smokers. Ten states have passed laws to control smoking in the workplace. In response of the objection the Tobacco Institute has tried to fight back. However, Minnesota was the first state to enact a law protection for the non-smoker. In 1975 the Clean Indoor Air Act was passed. This act made it illegal to smoke in all public places, unless an area was set aside specifically for smoking. Smoking is not allowed in city buses, grocery stores, offices, and many other locations. Minnesota’s law is considered a model because it inspired other states to pass similar laws. In 1980 voters in Florida and California went for the same movement Minnesota went through. However the proposal was rejected. So instead they had laws passed that didn’t allow smoking on trains, buses, grocery stores, health care centers, and many other places. California hit smokers by having a law passed to raise the tax on cigarettes. This would cause sales to go down. All these laws were being passed just so more lives would be saved and the air would be cleaner. If a single cigarette is such a killer I don’t know why you would continue to smoke if you know it is tearing away at your lungs. While progress has certainly been made in reducing exposure to smoking and secondhand smoke and much more is needed to be done. Thousands of employees at their work are exposed to harmful levels of secondhand smoke on a daily basis. All Americans need to recognize and protect themselves from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke because no matter where or what you do there will always be smokers in your life. So if you know somebody who smokes encourage him to stop and it might change or even save his or her life. So now you know some more things about Second Hand Smoke, the effects smoking has on your life, and some current policies against Public smoking. And I hope that your opinion on smoking has changed and have realized that it is a killer even if you’re not a smoker. So now when you go to a restaurant with smokers, be sure you sit in the Non-smoking section because that decision can save your life. Bibliography Gano, Lila. Smoking. Getting College Essay Help Important Dos and Don’ts

Getting College Essay Help Important Do's and Don’ts SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing – of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service? If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you’ve come to the right place! In this article, I’ll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay. I’ll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one. Advice for Editors Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing? The Bottom Line What's Next? What Kind Of Help With Your Essay Can You Get? Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing. There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of reallypolishing your final product. Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you. Editing Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work. Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing isgood editing. In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved. What’s Good Editing? Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sureyou understand the actual essay promptyou’re supposed to be answering. Open-endedness. Good editing is all aboutasking questions about your ideas and work, butwithout providing answers. It's about lettingyou stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view. Objectivity. It's usually better for an editor tonot be emotionally involved with what you’re writing. For example, if your essay is about a parent, that parent should probably notedit your work.Good editing can also be a preview ofhow a reader will respond to what you’re writing, pointing out potentially confusing or offensive moments in your work. Great editors show you the many available paths, but don't tell you where to go. What Should an Editor Do For You? Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that thetrip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do? Help Brainstorm Topics Sometimes it’s easier to bounce thoughtsoff of someone else. This doesn’t mean that your editorgets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic optionsyou've come up with. This way, you’re less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or towrite about something that isn’t actually important to you. If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check outour guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay. Help Revise Your Drafts Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing isabout asking questions, not giving answers. Revision questions shouldpoint out: Places where more detail or more description would help thereaderconnect with youressay Places where structure and logic don’t flow, losing the reader's attention Places where there aren’t transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader Moments where your narrative or the argumentsyou're making are unclear But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting – editors let authors fix the problems themselves. A good editor's favorite punctuation mark. What Kind of Editing Should You Avoid? Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision. You may be dealing with a bad editor if they: Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn’t come from you Use a thesaurus to makeyour collegeessay sound "more mature" Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn’t come from you Tell you what to say and how to say it Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something elseyou wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions. Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing? Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethicalside of the line. An editor should say that theopening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it. An editor should point out where yourprose isunclearor vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay. An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go. With a good editor, these things will always only come from the author's head. Proofreading Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader. Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only processwhere someone else can actually add to or take away things from youressay. This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters. What’s Good Proofreading? Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must. Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreadersshould correctspelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to anyformatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing). Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make surethat you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that’s your job andnot the proofreader's. Proofreaders are like entomologists, hunting for tiny specks amidst a vast landscape. What Kind of Proofreading Should You Avoid? A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job. Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are: If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished. If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes. If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing. Does your proofreader's desk look like this? Maybe not the right person for the job... What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay? Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading aregood – even required! But they also want to make sure you’re the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see workthat reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important. On the Importance of Editing Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don’t allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others’ edits and opinions when they seem helpful. (Bates College) Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay’s flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. (Dickinson College) On the Value of Proofreading Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well – such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend – and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. (Yale University) Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. (Oberlin College) On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. (Carleton College) Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we’re probably going to notice. (Vanderbilt University) So, basically, a big old thumbs up on the whole "get someone to look at your essay" situation, as far as colleges are concerned. Who Can/Should Help You? Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self. Parents or Close Relatives Your family may be full ofpotentially excellent editors!Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you. A parent or close family memberis a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the followingquestions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader?Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won’t create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent? One suggestion for defusingface-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parenta draft, have themwrite you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestionsyou want to use and which to discard. Teachers or Tutors A humanities teacher thatyou have a good relationship with isa great choice.I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, areall used to reviewing student work. Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure itâ€Å"sounds like you.† If your teacher or tutor has some experience withwhat college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft. Guidance or College Counselor at Your School The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your workis that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay. At the same time, school counselorstend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what worksand which college is focused on what aspect of the application. Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselortends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1college counselor, you’re unlikely to get that person’s undivided attention and focus. It isstill useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version. Friends, Siblings, or Classmates Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you. Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don’t sound like you. You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work. "I loved that part when you wrote Baa-aaa-baaa. But I feel like you should add some more details to that Baaa-baa-aaa section." "Oh, thanks, man. You're the baaa-est." Advice for Editors If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation. First, your editor should read our advice about how towrite a college essay introduction, how to spot and fix a bad college essay, and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked. Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will helpthem to guide you. Introduction Questions Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not? Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea? Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through. Essay Body Questions Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words? How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay? Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing? Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs?Between the narrative and moments of insight? Reader Response Questions Does the writer’s personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of â€Å"who he or she is†? Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well? Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough? Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay? What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement? Editing is just like fixing a guitar. Except, you know, without a screwdriver. And you don't need to know anything about guitars. Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing? One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service, like the many proliferating on the internet. My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service. When to Consider a Paid Editor In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you. If you can't ask your parents. For example, ifyour parents aren’t good writers, or if English isn’t their first language. Or ifyou think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!) If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybeyou don’t have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won’t know what admissions officers want to see. If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students. If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be thatyour essay is on a very personal topic that you’re unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn’t fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays. If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so.If you have finite resources, I’d say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it’sPrepScholaror someone else) is better way to spend your money. This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more. Should You Hire an Essay Coach? On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they haveexperience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it’s more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you. But, on the minus side, you’ll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn’t know that much about you. In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantageto paying someone to help you. If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can’t afford the coach’s fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale - many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice – essay coachesdon't have any special magic that can back up those promises. Should You Send Your Essay to a Service? On the plus side, essay editingservices provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less. If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results. On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them. If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's.In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay. Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editingthat writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn’t write the essay, or the skill of the essay mightnot be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores. Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else? NO! Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don’t do this! For one thing, you’ll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this: I certify that all information submitted in the admission process- including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials- is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application) For another thing, if your academic record doesn’t match the essay’s quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies. Admission officers have full access to yourwriting portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, butthere are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays – you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn’t also bought by 50 other students. Don't be the guy trying to pass this off as your own original work. The Bottom Line You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting Colleges very much want to see your authentic self (your ideas, your insights, your writing ability, and style) on the page All of them agreethat getting light editing and proofreading isnecessary Look for admissions essay help from: Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings If you can't ask any of those, you can payfor college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches whoover-edit you work Don’t buy a pre-written essay!
